February 14, 1985
I thought last Valentine’s Day was bad. This year was horrible. I decided to go down to the dungeons after dinner to hide from all of my love stricken classmates, thinking it would be much quieter down there. Professor Snape seemed a little suspicious when I asked him if I could study in the potions classroom, but gave his assent without question. He was working in his office and I had just spread my books and papers out on one of the tables when one of the Slytherin boys, whose name I can never remember, burst in with his girlfriend. I assume they had banked on the dungeon being the last place people would think of as romantic and were not expecting anyone to be there. When the girl saw me she tried to pull her boyfriend back through the door, obviously wanting to find somewhere they could be alone. He threw her off and moved into the room until he stood over me, smirking. He asked me what I was doing and I ignored him, since it was pretty clear I was studying. I knew from his tone he only asked as a precursor to something else. It could only get worse and I began gathering my things to leave. Apparently encouraged by this, he continued by informing me that the Slytherins were onto me and it was no use ‘lying in wait’ for Professor Snape since they would never let me tarnish their Head of House’s honor. I’m sure Professor Snape heard. How could he not have? I tried desperately not to react but I could feel my face burning. I shoved the last of my books into my bag with shaking hands and rushed out past the boy’s pouting girlfriend.
On the bright side no one will ever catch me staring at Professor Snape again, since I’ve been too mortified to even glance in his direction ever since.

June 1, 1985
I was surprised and a little apprehensive when Professor Dumbledore called me to office today. I thought that maybe some of the nastier rumours about me had reached the Head Master’s ears, but I needn’t have worried. He offered me the position of Ancient Runes teacher when Professor Babbling retires in the next few years, even though I haven’t taken my NEWTs yet. I told him I’d be honored and he gave me the names of a few wizards that would be willing to let me work under them in the meantime to give me some real world experience with the different types of runes. I’m very flattered and grateful that Professor Dumbledore thought of me for this opportunity, especially since I hadn’t really figured out what I was going to do yet anyway.

June 22, 1985
The NEWTs are done and today is my last day at Hogwarts until I return as a teacher. I’m going to miss it here, especially Professor Snape. Though it’s probably a good thing I’ll be traveling for a while; maybe by the time I come back my feelings for him will have gone. I wrote him a letter explaining my feelings for him and apologizing for any negative effects those feelings and all the rumors might have had on him. I hope he’ll understand.

This is the thirteenth installment of the Harry Potter fanfic I’m working on. Quick summery: My OC Jathen is Lily’s cousin. Jathen and Lily’s parents were killed in a car accident shortly after Jathen started school at Hogwarts. Snape started working at Hogwarts and Lily and James are dead as well. Jathen has become even more inverted and the only thing keeping him going is his attraction to Snape. Jathen was able to continue taking Potions because of his high OWL scores. Things got trickier for him because the other students found out he was gay. Here you can see that the Slytherins had figured out who Jathen fancied. A little bit of light in the dark, Dumbledore offered him a job. Until he starts that job Jathen is determined to try and leave his feelings for Snape behind and also sent a letter to Snape promising this.
A little note about Professor Babbling. According to The Harry Potter Lexicon, in an early planning for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban JK Rowling had on her site information about some of the teachers such as the Ancient Runes and Arithmancy professors. The Arithmancy teacher, Professor Vector, was mentioned in passing in one of the books (can’t remember which exactly) but the Ancient Runes professor was never actually named in the books. As the lexicon points out a lot of the information changed on the particular page Rowling had the info on, so it can’t be considered strict canon since it never made it into the books and was never officially stated. Taking advantage of this, I decided to honor Rowling’s conceptual plan for that professor by making sure they were there at some point and then adding in Jathen for the position later. It’s much sooner than when Prisoner of Azkaban takes place but at least they were mentioned.
Pairing: Not telling quite yet but I’m sure some of you can probably guess.

NOTE: Please read in this order for full enjoyment. I know the numbering system is a little weird with the short story in the middle their but this is the order in which I intended them to be read. Oh and I did not delete the old ‘book version’ of these entries I simply put them in my scraps gallery for now.

The idea for using diary entries for this project came from watching the YouTube video Potter Puppet Pals: Snape’s Diary (Extended Version)

I felt bad for Jathen that he was picked on like that and then I felt happy for him as Dumbledore offered him the position
